Our History

Welcome to Atlas Engine and Pump Company

Atlas Engine and Pump Company

Atlas Engine and Pump Company produced a series of high performance, high efficiency small propulsion engines in the early 1990’s out of Groton, Connecticut.  AE offered a 2 cylinder, 2 stroke engine model with 775 cc displacement generating 70 horsepower at 5500 rpm.  This engine ran on leaded or unleaded gasoline of 89 octane or hire and weighed 110lbs.

It included a US Coast Guard approved flame arrestor/air cleaner as it was primarily designed to drive power boats.

The company also sold a 3 cylinder, stroke engine with 1163 cc displacement producing 110 horsepower at 5200 rpm. It had the same fuel requirements as the 2 cylinder engine and weighed 160lbs. It offered triple 44mm Mikuni Carburetors and also included the US Coast Guard approved flame arrestor/air cleaner.

In addition, Atlas Engine produced and sold the Atlas Water Jet Pump drive system to complete a nautical drivetrain.  The water jet pump accommodated 40-120hp propulsion systems and weighed 65lbs.  The outdrive jet pump included a water box muffler with thru pump exhaust and worked in both forward and reverse wit a reverse gate mechanism, as well as an adjustable trim place.  The engines provided high power in an efficient, lower weight package with a jet drive propulsion system ideal for smaller, lightweight speed boats such as the Pony Boats manufactured and sold out of Idaho in the 70’s and 80’s.

A primary selling point for Atlas Engines & Pump systems was they provided the same horsepower for about 20% less cost than standard outboard boat engines offered at the time, circa 1993.

Pocatello, Idaho businessman Jeffrey Matkin purchased the assets and remaining inventory of the Atlas Engine & Pump Company after the company stopped production, and holds the business assets currently.  He welcomes questions and inquiries at jlmatkin@aol.com.
